GWS MEETINGS are held on the 3rd Tuesday of February, April, June, October, and December at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon, 7:30pm.
May 10-14 Cumberland Trail hike & Obed River paddle. 5 day camp at Frozen Head campground in Wurtburg Tenn. Flush toilets, hot showers, campsites next to whitewater creek. Kathy's favorite place to camp. Still spring up there with wildflowers galore, waterfalls. We'll hike the Cumberland Trail and canoe the Obed Wild and Scenic River. There's local bluegrass music at the campground on Friday night, come do some buck dancing. Must pre-register with Kathy Stege
May 24-26 Flint River Camping. We will be canoe camping on the Flint River for 2 nights. Meet at 9:30am at the Pobiddy Road bridge, south of Thomaston. We will paddle from Pobiddy to GA-128 Contact Chris Bryson
May 31-June 1 Pine Mountain Trail Hike. Come for a weekend full of hiking! We will be breaking the 23 mile Pine Mountain trail into two segments and hiking each of them, with camping in between at the group pioneer campsites at FDR State Park. Contact Tom Payne for the details.
June 14 Daypaddle on the Ocmulgee River. Join trip leader Joe Mangum as we paddle from Juliette down to Pope's Ferry on the Ocmulgee River. Photos from a previous trip to this same section.
June 17 G.W.S. Meeting Join us at 7:30pm for our bi-monthly meeting at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon (directions).
June 28 Peach Ice Cream Bike Ride. Get up early to beat the heat and meet at 7:30am at the firehouse at the corner of Shi Road and Maynard's Mill Road for a ride near Musella (west of Macon). We will be stopping for peach ice cream at the midpoint. Hilly roads for 30 miles. Contact Margaret Clay for more info.
July (Dates to Be Determined) Road Trip to the Ozarks. river camping in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. These rivers are paradise on earth. They are crystal clear spring-fed rivers that can be warm enough for comfortable swimming. There is more wildlife and more birds than I have ever seen anywhere. There are fabulous cliffs and caves.. July 12 Milledgeville Bike Ride. Join trip leader Joe Mangum as he leads an early bike ride around the rural roads surrounding Milledgeville. Meet at 7:30am at his home.
July 26-27 Car Camp and Day Hike at Raven Cliffs. An easy hike to one of north Georgia's cliffs, with waterfalls. Leader: Corky Hayward 478-992-3004.
Aug 1-3 Backpack up Tray Mountain on the AT. Ever want to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail? Here is your chance to do two nights on it. Join trip leader Joe Mangum for this moderately difficult backpacking trip up Tray Mountain. (southbound on AT from Dick's Gap on US-76 to Unicoi Gap near Helen)
Aug 9-10 Ocoee River Rafting and Hiawassee River Canoeing. We will take an all day rafting trip (with a raft guide) down the Olympic whitewater section of the Ocoee River, then spend the next day on the tamer Hiawassee. Car camping in the area. Photos. Contact Tom Payne for the details.
Aug 16 GWS Picnic at Lake Juliette. Rather than a normal meeting in August, we will have our annual GWS summer cookout and potluck dinner at Lake Juliette again. Bring a swimsuit to beat the heat in lake
Sept 4-7 Sapelo Island. Normally our trips to Cabretta Island Group Camp on Sapelo are a nice way to get away from it all. Trip Leader Bud Queen has managed to get us another such trip this year! Photos
Sept 19-21 Cherry Hill Recreation Area. Get away to a quiet, small campground in South Carolina's mountains for a weekend of car camping and dayhikes. Contact Bonnie Gehling for more info.
Oct 4-5 Overnight on the Oconee River. Join trip leader Joe Mangum as we paddle from Ball's Ferry to Dublin, with overnight canoe camping along the way.
Oct 11-13 Joyce Kilmer Forest. Ever want to see big trees? What about REALLY big trees? Come car camping with us, and we will explore the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest for some nice ones....photos. Contact Bonnie Gehling for more info.
Oct 18-19 Silver Comet Trail Bike Ride. Bring your bike (any type of bike) for a weekend of bicycling on the Silver Comet Trail. This trip will involve the entire trail, beginning in Smyrna and ending in Alabama. Overnight will be near Cedartown. It is about 45 miles of biking each day...but shorter routes might be available as well. Contact Tom Payne or Margaret Clay for more info.

Nov 28-30 Post Turkey Day Canoe Camping. For many years, John Houser has lead us on an after Thanksgiving excursion down a river, and this year hopefully will be no exception. The river is a surprise, so you will just have to wait and see what it will be!
