Georgia Wilderness Society
Cloudland Canyon in the Fall

Cloudland Canyon State Park
Oct. 29 – Nov. 1

Bright blue skies and cool, crisp Fall weather were a treat for 13 GWSers this past weekend at Cloudland Canyon State Park in the far northwestern corner of the beautiful state of Georgia. Leaves were just beginning to turn their Fall colors. GWS occupied three cabins and a campsite on the West Rim of the park.
On Friday we hiked the Sitton Gulch Trail with the Sitton Gulch Creek flowing alongside. Many rocks of various sizes in the creek made for beautiful white water. The Trail ended at a staircase and boardwalk at the bottom of Hemlock Falls. A total of 600 steps led to the upper falls, Cherokee Falls, but no one took the challenge.
On Saturday the trail circled the West Rim which gave spectacular views down into the canyon. On Sunday a few members stayed a little longer to hike three miles of the mountain bike trails, one trail by the name of Can’t Hardly.
Each evening we had a wonderful campfire. We didn’t howl at the blue Halloween moon on Saturday, but we did howl at the campfire stories which are always a hoot. S’mores on Saturday added to the fun.
Trip leader Margaret Clay thanks Tom, Holly and Tommy Payne, Terry and Rosemary Ross, Joe Mangum, Genise and Bernard Spenle, Ann Sherra, Bonnie Gehling, Sue Richmond and Jo Scott for a great trip.
