Ocmulgee River Canoeing Day Trip 20 June 2020

We had 10 members signed up an all came out for a wonderful day trip on the Ocmulgee. Our initial meet was at the Hwy 83 Bridge at 8AM to get signed in and a short brief on shuttle procedures. Participants on this venture were Bud & Niki, Margaret, Deborah, Jane, Tom & Holly, Curt & Irene and Kerry. Arrived at put-in on Weiss Creek & Ocmulgee River at 8:45 to unloaded boats and gear. Several visitors were camping, cooking out and fishing at Weiss Creek when we arrived. We got unloaded and the drivers prepared to go back to HWY 83 to drop vehicles. After masking up I used my truck to bring drivers back to Weiss Creek and we launched all boats by 9:30AM.

The day was cool and comfortable to canoe and we arrived at the Horse sand bar/trail and stopped for a dip, float and lunch. While at the sand bar three horse riders came up and watered their horses and talked with us for a while. After lunch and a float around to the back side of the sandbar with Jane we got back to the rest of the group and they had corralled a beautiful Indigo Snake that had decided to swim the river right where we were. After careful scrutiny, Margaret & Curt made a positive ID and let the Indigo sleek off to more friendly territory.

After lunch the sun was directly overhead all the way to the takeout with some shade in the bends of the river & under overhanging trees, which were fun to navigate thru. All arrived safely at the takeout Hwy 83 at about 3PM. Curt gave me a ride back to retrieve my truck while Margaret & Kerry sat with Niki. It was a very nice day on the river, Finally.
