Georgia Wilderness Society
FDR State Park
Six GWS members gathered together at FDR State Park in Pine Mtn., GA, to have some good times together in one of the park’s beautiful rustic cabins. They were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. We stayed in cabin #7, a two-bedroom, overlooking the lake. The Coles and Mangums arrived Tuesday, Feb. 24. On Wednesday, The Mangums hiked around the Dowdell Knob area, while the Coles hiked some of the Pine Mtn. Trail, from the WJSP TV antenna southbound, seeing the waterfalls, before looping back. On Thursday, we all hiked a few miles of the Man O’ War Trail, beginning at the Callaway Gardens Country Store. That afternoon, Terry & Rosemary Ross joined us. The three men hiked some of the Pine Mtn. Trail in the Dowdell Knob area. With the leaves off the trees, we had some nice views on both hikes.
One afternoon, we sat on our cabin’s screened-in back porch and watched the geese chasing each other on the lake. Our meals, all taken at the cabin, were delicious (no, we did not cook the goose.) The temperatures weren’t too cold but we had a fire in the huge fireplace each night. We all headed home on Friday morning, all seemingly having enjoyed another gathering of friends.
Participants were: trip leader Curt Cole, Irene Cole, Joe & Jane Mangum, Terry & Rosemary Ross.
