Flint River

GWS July 17-18 , 2010 Flint River Float with Niki and Bud Queen

There was a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. The weather prediction was spot on. Beautiful white, gray and black cumulus clouds swirled across the sky offering both sunshine and intermittent heavy and light rain.

Because the Flint River ran red, fast and high from recent rains the 17 GWS members and friends mostly floated to the campsite.

After putting up our tents we used our life jackets to lazily floated the length of our long sandy white sandbar.

To keep cool on Saturday night we chattered and laughed in a large circle around the campfire. The rain clouds disappeared overnight but reappeared the following morning. A light drizzle kept us cool as we floated to our cars.

Although this was Tammy Youman's first canoe camping trip she said it was fun. We also enjoyed having Allie Scott, Joe's 13 year-old grand-daughter and Morgan Bailey, Kerry Hoyt's nine-year old god-daughter.

Many hawks, wood ducks, egrets, an owl and a little blue heron were sighted.

Some of us stopped at Brown's Orchard near the canoe take-out for a cup of delicious peach ice cream.

Trip participants were Kurt and Irene Cole, Tom and Holly Payne, Basil and Tammy Youman, Rob Apley, Kerry Colbern, Shirly Williams, Wayne Etheredge, Joe and Allie Scott, Cary Hoyt, Morgan Bailey, Heath York and Bud and Niki Queen
